Our History

Owners and brothers Mario and Rafael Gurrola are proud to have had the opportunity to continue the legacy and high quality standards set by Howard Hohlbein, who left a career with semiconductors to start the Red Pepper Restaurant chain in 1965. Born in Zacatecas, Mexico, Mario and Rafael are grateful for the valuable experience they gained working many years for Howard. Mario began as a Chef at the Palo Alto restaurant in 1988, and Rafael began as a Dishwasher at the Soquel restaurant in 1989. At one time there were also Red Pepper Restaurants in Cupertino and two in Los Altos (downtown and the current location on Homestead Road).

In the mid-90’s, Howard (who passed away in 1999) sold the chain to his longtime friend, Kent Clark, who in turn sold this restaurant to Mario and Rafael ten years later. On March 1, 2006 we opened our doors under the current name, Red Pepper Grill, but we continue to offer the same delicious recipes (known by Mario by heart) and we retained some of the original staff. Chef Uriel Castaneda started in 1986 as a Chef at the Cupertino restaurant. Waiter Eduardo Fuentes started in 1984 as a Waiter at the Palo Alto restaurant.

With the generous support from Los Altos businessman Tom Harrington, we are pleased to announce the renovation of the entire restaurant, including the outdoor patio.

The Red Pepper Grill is a family-owned restaurant.  I, Mario Gurrola, had already spent 17 years at this restaurant, starting as assistant to the cook and working up the head chef, when the owner offered to sell it to me and my brother, Rafael.  We jumped on this opportunity to continue the Red Pepper Grill commitment to serving the finest fresh Mexican cuisine to friends and neighbors and our extended customer base.  We pledge to carry on that tradition in this community of customers that feels like our family
